Add placement properties to OSD Layers
That is the default install location. Set it to pass input as arguments. Save it as an application and change all media files to open with that application. This opens two processes in the window manager and uses applescript. Im sure I could make a Obj-c app that does the same, but I'm too lazy to do it right now.

VLC and Movist crash in the same pattern as the OP mentions. I just installed Mplayer so will see how that goes in terms of just crashing.
